Architect
A few of the questions people ask before working with a Los Angeles architect — about the practice, the areas served, and how to begin.
Kevin Cohen Design is a Los Angeles architectural design and consulting practice. The work centres on residential and hillside architecture — designing homes and spaces — along with design consulting on proportion, materials, and spatial planning.
Kevin is based in Los Angeles, California, where he was born and raised. He works with clients across Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties, as well as Bakersfield, Simi Valley, Porter Ranch and the San Fernando Valley, Sun Valley, and surrounding areas — including the Los Angeles hillside neighborhoods such as the Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood, Santa Monica, and Pasadena. Because most of the work is handled remotely with on-site visits as needed, the practice serves a wide region. See all service areas →
Yes. Most of the work — design, drawings, and coordination — is handled remotely, which is what lets the practice serve clients across a wide region. On-site visits are scheduled when a project genuinely needs them, such as reading the site at the start and checking key moments during construction. For many homeowners this is a practical way to work with an architect whose approach fits, wherever the project is located.
Kevin holds a Master of Architecture (M.Arch) from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine. He received the Outstanding Directed Design Research Award for the project “Hillside Los Angeles.”
His work is defined by clarity, restraint, and quiet sophistication — an approach rooted in proportion, detail, and atmosphere. The goal is spaces that feel effortless, elevated, and enduring, shaped by Los Angeles's light, landscape, and hillside terrain.
Yes. Hillside and site-specific design is a focus of the practice. Kevin lets grade, light, and outlook shape the design so a home belongs to its site — an approach recognised by the Outstanding Directed Design Research Award for “Hillside Los Angeles.”
Both. Kevin Cohen Design is a design-build practice offering architecture, design, and general construction together — including ADU design and build, home additions, whole-home remodels, and kitchen and bath remodels across Los Angeles.
Design-build means the design and the construction are handled as one process by one team, rather than split between separate contracts. It gives you a single point of accountability from the first drawing through to the final inspection, with fewer handoffs along the way. More on design-build →
Yes. Kevin prepares permit-ready drawings and works through the city's plan-check process — identifying which approvals a project is likely to trigger, preparing the documents the reviewing department expects, and responding to review comments through to permit issuance.
Yes. Alongside design, Kevin Cohen Design offers general construction and construction coordination, plus project management that keeps scope, schedule, budget, and trades aligned from design through completion. These are design-build and general construction services; specific licensing details for a given project are confirmed with Kevin directly before work begins.
Yes. Alongside full design commissions, Kevin offers design consulting — a focused, disciplined second opinion on proportion, material palette, and spatial planning for homeowners, builders, and designers.
